Origin and history

The church of Saint-Thomas de Llupia is a Romanesque church located in the commune of Llupia, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. It serves as a parish church for the local population. Its architecture and history are marked by medieval and Baroque influences, reflecting the artistic and religious evolutions of the region.

In 1998, during restoration work on the baroque altarpiece dedicated to Saint-Thomas, painted panels of a former Gothic altarpiece were discovered. These works, attributed to an anonymous artist nicknamed the Master of Llupia, testify to an unknown artistic heritage. Their discovery has enriched the knowledge of religious art in the Roussillon.

The church is part of the landscape of the forgotten Romanesque churches of Roussillon, as mentioned in the works of Géraldine Mallet (2003). These buildings, often modest, play a central role in the community and spiritual life of Occitan villages since the Middle Ages. Their preservation allows us to understand the evolution of religious practices and architectural styles in the region.
