Origin and history
Saint Thomas de Touques Church is a Catholic building dating back to the 13th century, with major modifications in the 15th century. Located in the village of Touques, in the department of Calvados in Normandy, it is marked by an architecture combining Romanesque, Gothic and classical styles. The nave, of Romanesque origin (XII century), contrasts with Gothic elements and a Louis XIV style portal, decorated with three empty niches. The tower, originally built in the 12th century, was redesigned with foothills, and its current arrow, 21 meters high and covered with slates, dates back to 1870.
The church bears the term Saint-Thomas with reference to Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, whose passage to Touques is mentioned, although this information requires confirmation. A notable window depicts the assassination of Thomas Becket, highlighting this historic link. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 17 July 1926, recognizing its heritage value. The facade, pierced by high windows, and the tower modified over the centuries illustrate the architectural evolutions and functional adaptations of the church.
Before 1870, the tower was equipped with heavy, defensive elements typical of medieval constructions, then replaced by the current arrow. The property of the church belongs to the commune of Touques, and its exact address is 4 Rue Georges Roger. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its local importance. The church thus embodies a religious and architectural heritage, reflecting the stylistic influences and transformations experienced over the centuries.
