Origin and history

The church of Saint-Trésain d'Avenay-Val-d'Or, located in the Marne, finds its origins in a legend dating back to the end of the fifth century. According to some historians, its initial construction was linked to the death of Saint Tresain, a missionary from the British Isles to evangelize Champagne. In the 7th century, Berthe d'Avenay founded an abbey whose furniture is now preserved in the church. The sources attest that the parish building precedes this abbey, although the material evidence is lacking for this distant period.

The construction of the present church began in the 13th century, as evidenced by the first official records: a papal bubble of Eugene III in 1147, a charter of Alberic of Humbert in 1214, and a royal act of Philip the Bel in 1272. Count Hugues de Champagne, miraculously healed according to legend, signed in 1103 a charter for his reconstruction. In Gothic style, the building underwent major transformations in the 16th century: recasting of the nave, addition of bays in the choir, construction of the current bell tower and resumption of the façade with a flamboyant Gothic portal.

Ranked a historic monument in 1845, the church retains an exceptional furniture heritage. Four 17th-century paintings, an organ of the 1770s-1780s from Saint Peter's Abbey, and relics of local saints (Gombert, Berthe, Ursule) are housed there. The statues adorning the portal, added in the 19th century, complete this ensemble. Since 2011, restoration campaigns aim to preserve its structure, such as the consolidation of the pillars carried out between 2011 and 2012.

Historical sources point to its link with the former Benedictine royal abbey of Avenay, which is now destroyed. The liturgical objects, including two 17th-century antependiums depicting the Martyr of St.Gombert and the Child Jesus bearing his cross, as well as a painting by St.Berthe of the Abbey Foundation (early 17th century), illustrate this spiritual continuity. The organ, partially classified in 1959 and 1975, with its carved oak buffet of 1776, bears witness to the period craftsmanship.

The legend of Saint Tresain, mixed with the history of the evangelization of Champagne, gives this church a strong symbolic dimension. The miracles attributed to Saint Berthe, Saint Gombert and Saint Tresain, mentioned in the medieval charters, marked local devotion. Today, the building remains a place of memory and worship, embodying almost fifteen centuries of religious and architectural history in the East.
