Origin and history

The church Saint-Trophime de Barcarin is a religious monument built in 1865, located in the hamlet of Salin-de-Giraud, on the commune of Arles, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. This place of worship, built in stone, was originally intended for the inhabitants of the hamlet, especially the sauniers who exploited the surrounding salt marshes. Its sober architecture, with a stone façade of Fontvieille decorated with a pediment and two niches housing statues, reflects the local constructive traditions of the era.

For several decades the church has hosted religious services for the local community, playing a central role in the spiritual and social life of the residents. Today, its use has decreased, with religious ceremonies now celebrated in a village chapel. This change is part of the demographic and social evolution of Salin de Giraud, where traditional activities such as salt extraction have undergone transformation.

The building stands out for its bell tower, topped by a metal campanile bearing a single bell, an architectural element characteristic of Provencal churches. The roof, covered with Romanesque tiles, and the Fontvieille stone used for the facade underline the integration of the church into the Camargue landscape. Although less frequented today, it remains a testimony of the industrial and religious history of the region, linked to the exploitation of salt and the life of the saloons.
