Origin and history

The Saint Valentine's Church of Bagneux-la-Fosse, located in the Aube department in the Grand East region, is a religious building built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its Latin cross structure, its five-sided apse and a five-span nave. The bell tower, rebuilt in 1826, was initially positioned on the cross of the transept. The church was placed under the protection of Valentin de Griselles and depended on the dean of Bar-sur-Seine. It was offered to the abbey of Molesme between 1076 and 1111 by Aymon Le Roux, during his monastic withdrawal.

The church's furniture includes notable funeral inscriptions, such as that of Estienne Laret, donor in 1533 for the laying of the first stone of a pillar, or the slabs of Nicolas Babeau (curé died in 1696) and Baroness des Planeaulx (1752). A pulpit to preach decorated with scenes of the four Evangelists and a musician angel, attributed to Thevenin de Langres, enriched the building. These elements illustrate the historic and religious significance of the site, which was designated a historic monument in 1926.

The church also retains traces of its central role in the local community, as evidenced by the epitaphs of officers (François Merey, 1782) or anonyms (1694). Its architecture and furniture reflect the artistic and social developments of the 15th to 16th centuries, as well as the religious practices of the time. The exclusive episcopal snack and its inscription in the heritage underline its historical and cultural value.
