Origin and history
The Valentine's Church of Lavoncourt finds its roots in a medieval construction whose initial architectural details remain poorly known. A first campaign of work could date back to the 16th century, although this hypothesis requires confirmation. The building was deeply marked by a fire in 1637, which required major structural changes, partially redefining its appearance and interior layout.
In the 18th century, between 1736 and 1766, a new reconstruction campaign was carried out, including the elevation of the existing bell tower, dated before 1637. The 19th century (circa 1826-1873) saw additional work of enlargement or renovation, leading to the present configuration: a single nave of three vaulted bays, a transept, and three lateral chapels dedicated to religious figures (Rosary, Guardian Angel, etc.). The interior houses furniture and liturgical objects protected as historical monuments.
The church has been classified as a historic monument since 2016 and illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of a rural building over centuries. Its location in Lavoncourt (Haute-Saône) and its turbulent history reflect the local dynamics of reconstruction and devotion, typical of the small communes of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The protected elements, such as retables, statues and goldsmiths, bear witness to its central role in the community and spiritual life of the region.
