Origin and history

The church Saint-Valéry de Saint-Vallier, located in the Drôme department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a monument dating back to the 12th century with a first Romanesque-Byzantine construction. The oldest parts still visible today, such as the apse and the choir, date from the 16th century and adopt an ogival Gothic style. This choir houses the funeral chapel of the Poitiers family, highlighting its historical and aristocratic importance.

In the 17th century, the inhabitants of Saint-Vallier erected the bell tower, marking a community involvement in the evolution of the building. A century later, in the 18th century, a new span was added, this time in a neo-Greek style, illustrating architectural transitions over time. The church was partially classified as historical monuments on 4 July 1972, thus recognizing its heritage value.

Available sources, such as data from the Merimée database or the works of historian Albert Caise (1867), confirm his status as a communal property and his central role in the local religious and architectural landscape. The precise address, 4 Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, and its Insee code (26333) anchor the monument in the territory of Saint-Vallier, between Valencia and the Rhône valley.
