Origin and history

The Saint-Vigor church of Asnières-en-Bessin is a Roman Catholic building, partially rebuilt in the 13th century. Located in the Calvados department, it is distinguished by its 12th century nave, its carved modillons and its raised choir. The building, dedicated to Saint Vigor, bishop of Bayeux, reflects medieval architectural developments, mixing Romanesque elements (gates, cornices) and Gothic elements (ogival vaults, lancette bays). Its square bell tower, decorated with blind arches and surmounted by an octagonal arrow, illustrates this stylistic duality.

Ranked a historic monument in 1840, the church suffered major damage in 1945 during the explosion of an explosive depot, destroying its tower, its windows and part of its vault. The restoration, led by architects Paul Colas and Paul Leroy between 1945 and 1952, reopened the building to worship. The works have notably restored the Romanesque windows on the south side and preserved the historical modillons, some of which represent human faces or animals. A commemorative plaque in the southern chapel pays tribute to the victims of the explosion.

The interior preserves traces of a funerary liter, attributed to Augustin de Baudre, lord of Asnières, who died in 1782, whose coat of arms adorn the walls of the southern chapel. The latter, rebuilt in 1638 by Louis Le Patouf, Sieur de la Cavée, also houses an engraved stone attesting to this renovation. The transept, the flat choir of three bays and the nave at foothills testify to the evolution of the site, marked by additions and repairs over the centuries.

The church of Saint-Vigor embodies both a religious heritage and a local memory, linked to the seigneurs of the place and historical upheavals, such as the conflicts of the twentieth century. Its early classification and successive restorations underline its importance in the Norman monumental landscape, between medieval heritage and modern resilience.
