Origin and history
Saint-Vigor d'Authie Church is a Catholic religious building located in the town of Authie, Calvados department, Normandy. Built in the 12th century, it is dedicated to Vigor de Bayeux, bishop of this city from 513 until his death in 537. This monument illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the region, marked by Romanesque influences.
The building bell tower and the church's southern gate have been classified as historical monuments since 22 July 1913. These architectural elements bear witness to the artistic and historical richness of the building. In addition, the cemetery cross, dating from the 18th century and inscribed since March 18, 1927, completes this heritage complex. It is presented in the form of a stone twisted column, surmounted by a partially preserved cross.
Saint-Vigor Church is part of a historical context where religious buildings played a central role in community life. In the 12th century, Normandy was a dynamic region, marked by cultural exchanges and strong religious activity. Churches, like Authia, served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, thus strengthening the social and spiritual ties of the local population.
