Origin and history

The Church of Saint-Vigor de Colombiers-sur-Seulles is a Catholic building located in the department of Calvados, Normandy. Built in the 12th century, it is distinguished by its long pyramidal stone arrow and bell tower, partially classified as historical monuments since 1877. Prior to the Revolution, it was placed under the patronage of the Lord of Cully, then that of Colombiers-sur-Seulles, with part of the tithe given to the Abbey of Saint-Vigor of Bayeux.

The nave and bell tower date from the first half of the twelfth century, while the choir, built around the middle of the same century, seems to have replaced a higher anterior choir. The steeple, made of cut stone, features a vault of warheads on the ground floor and a staircase in screws. In the 18th century, the windows of the nave and choir were enlarged, and the sacristy was added in 1791, following a deliberation by the parishioners.

In the 19th century, the church underwent several major restorations: the nave was extended by a span in 1861-1864 under the direction of architect Alphonse Delauney, the vaults were rebuilt in 1869 by Charles Le Verrier, and the bell tower was restored between 1877 and 1878 by V. Ruprich-Robert. In 1889, a ceramic tile of Maubeuge was laid there, marking the end of the major works of this period.

The bell tower, the most remarkable element, has been listed as a historic monument since 14 July 1877. It bears witness to Norman Romanesque architecture, with its two-block stone steps and integrated staircase. The nave, on the other hand, combines stone and stone, reflecting medieval construction techniques.

The church of Saint-Vigor illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of Normandy, from its foundation in the Middle Ages to the restorations of the 19th century. It remains an active place of worship and a protected local heritage, managed by the municipality of Colombiers-sur-Seulles.

Historical sources, such as the works of Arcisse de Caumont or the archives of Monumentum, underline its importance in the religious and architectural landscape of Calvados. Its history is also linked to that of the abbey of Saint-Vigor de Bayeux, which perceived part of the tithes before the Revolution.
