Origin and history
The church of Saint-Vigor de Juaye is a Roman Catholic church located in the village of Juaye, in the commune of Juaye-Mondaye (Calvados, Normandy). Its choir dates from the 12th century, while its nave was built in the 13th century, more precisely in the second half. The building was restored in the 18th century, but its maintenance ceased after the merger of the communes of Juaye, Couvert and Bernières-Bocage in 1857, as well as the associated parishes, replaced by the Abbey Church of Mondaye.
The Saint-Vigor church, which has been listed as a historic monument since November 4, 1927, benefited from a restoration campaign conducted by volunteers of the Association Chantiers Histoire et Architecture Médiévales between 1999 and 2004. This work has partially preserved the ruins of this building, the property of which belongs to the municipality. Today, it bears witness to Norman medieval religious architecture, although its cultural use has disappeared.
Historical sources mention the church in the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont (1857), which describes its architectural characteristics. The site is also referenced by the Savage de l'art français and the Mérimée base, which specifies its inscription as a protected monument. The ruins, although partially preserved, offer an overview of the construction techniques of the 12th and 13th centuries in Lower Normandy, an area marked by a high density of religious buildings at that time.
