Origin and history

Saint Vincent d'En-Haut d'Eus Church is an 18th-century church built between 1726 and 1743 on a rocky nipple overlooking the village. It replaces the former parish church, the chapel of Saint Vincent below, and settles at the site of the former castle of La Volta. Dedicated to Saint Vincent, she became the spiritual heart of the local Catholic community.

The building is distinguished by its square bell tower and right apse, structuring a unique nave flanked by side chapels. Among these, the chapels of Saint Peter, Sainte-Thérèse, Saint Paul and Saint Francis Xavier house statues of saints and religious paintings, such as the Adoration of the Magi or the Adoration of the Shepherds. A high altar signed by Paul Sunyer and a retable of the 17th century Rosary, surrounding the Virgin and the patron saints, enrich his artistic heritage.

The church preserves an 18th century carillon wheel, operated during services, baptisms and marriages. This mechanism, composed of twelve bells placed on a wooden circle, illustrates the importance of liturgical traditions in village life. Since July 12, 1990, the monument has been included in the inventory of historic monuments, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

Its history is part of that of the Pyrénées-Orientales, where parish churches played a central role in social and religious organization. The construction of Saint Vincent d'En-Haut reflects the evolution of cultural practices and the affirmation of the Catholic community after the Council of Trent, in an area marked by Catalan and French influences.
