Origin and history
The Saint Vincent Church of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, classified as a Historic Monument in 1990, is a major architectural testimony to understand the evolution of religious constructions in the Hautes-Pyrénées after the 14th century. Its bell tower-wall, stone and wooden vaults, as well as its structures reflect techniques specific to the region. The primitive building, located outside the walls of the city, was erected in the 13th century on earlier religious remains, before a first nave was built at the present site.
In the 14th century, the bell tower-wall was added, followed by a new nave at the end of the same century and at the beginning of the 15th. Work continued until the beginning of the 16th century, including the construction of the southern gate between 1539 and 1557. After the earthquake of 1560, major restorations were undertaken at the end of the seventeenth century, including a wooden vault dated 1676. The 19th century marked a new phase of transformation, with the reconstruction of the bell tower-wall, the arrow, the upper gallery and two southern chapels.
The church is distinguished by its seven-sided apse, a rare architectural element. Its history is also marked by continuous adaptations, reflecting the liturgical needs and natural hazards of the region. Today, it remains a symbol of the religious and cultural heritage of Bagneres-de-Bigorre, open to the visit and property of the municipality.
