Origin and history

Saint-Vincent-Saint-Germain church in Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil, dedicated to Saints Vincent and Germain, dates back to the second half of the 12th century (circa 1170-1180). It replaces an earlier building, perhaps founded in the sixth century by Saint Germain. Its basilical plan, without transept and with flat bedside, illustrates the first Gothic art: nave with three vessels, raised choir, quadripartite vaults culminating at 17 meters, and a western facade adorned with a trilobed tympanic portal. The glass windows of the bedside (1220-1225 years), classified in 1908, represent the Passion, the tree of Jesse and the life of Saint Germain.

The bell tower collapsed in 1793, damaging the vaults of the north side, while the 12th century porch was destroyed in the 19th century. A major restoration was undertaken in the second half of the 19th century, financed by the Darblay family: reconstruction of the facade (1862), addition of a drum of entry (1872/1878), and neo-Gothic redevelopment (1895-1896) by Abbé Briscier and Louis Vollant. Archaeological stained glass windows (Julien Fournier) and a painted decoration (Alexis Douillard) complete the building. Ranked a historic monument in 2021 (after an inscription in 2018), the church also retains tombstones and a 19th century organ.

The architecture reveals stylistic evolutions between the nave and the choir: blind triforium with single (nef) or triple (chœur) bays, and piles with various columns. The lateral chapels (Vierge to the south, Saint Joseph to the north) frame the choir, accessible by three steps. The building, a communal property, bears witness to the transitions between Romanesque and Gothic, as well as the restorations of the 19th century, marked by the influence of nascent archaeology and neo-Gothic.
