Origin and history
The church of Saint-Winoc de Plouhinec, located in the Finistère in Brittany, is a 16th century religious building, built of stone and granite rubble. It is distinguished by its Latin cross shape, its central nave of five spans with low sides, and a massive tower supporting the bell tower. The latter, inspired by Pont-Croix, is dated 1582, although its construction probably began around 1530-1540. The west gate, adorned with a bas-relief representing a caravelle, and the niches at Saint du transept sud bear witness to a neat craftsmanship.
Inside, the arcades of the nave, mostly in the middle, contrast with two ogival arcades. The large-scale transept is illuminated by a flamboyant window, while fragments of ancient sandstones remain. The church was built on older foundations, as confirmed by the work carried out in 1987. Two distinct periods of construction are visible: the first, between 1565 and 1587, is marked by inscriptions on the west tower, while the second, in the eighteenth century (1718, 1730, 1731, 1769), corresponds to restorations and alterations.
The church suffered significant damage during a storm in 1891, requiring repairs. In the 20th century, despite declining attendance due to parish reorganizations, it benefited from regular restorations, including the bell tower (1987, 1989) and retables (1991). Its enclosure also houses a calvary called "Croaz Veret Coz" and a fountain of devotion located two kilometers south, a rare edicle of cut stone.
Partially classified as historical monuments in 1932 (Western facade, bell tower and transept), the church of Saint-Winoc illustrates the architectural evolution of Brittany, mixing Gothic tradition and Renaissance influences. Its history also reflects the preservation challenges faced by rural communities, as evidenced by the local archives evoking repeated requests for assistance in the 19th century.
