Origin and history

The Church of St. Agathe of Vercel, dedicated to St. Agathe (probably Agathe of Catania), was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier building, partially destroyed by fire. A stone from the bell tower, dated 1559, attests to this pre-existing church. The current stained glass windows, added in 1865, complement this architectural ensemble marked by its turbulent history.

The building has been listed as a historic monument since June 20, 1941, recognizing its heritage value. Two major renovation campaigns took place in 1997 (outside) and 1999 (inside), preserving its structure and decor. Today, the church depends on the parish of Valdahon Plateau, attached to the diocese of Besançon, and remains an active place of worship.

The interior furniture, remarkable, includes 18th-century woodwork and a pulpit to be preached in 1734, both classified in 1908 and made by the local cabinetmaker family Poyards. A painting of the martyrdom of St.Agathe (18th century, classified in 1975) and a altarpiece surmounted by a crown of glory (classified in 1928) adorn the choir. Other elements, such as lateral altars (classified in 1962) and confessionals (registered in 1999), testify to the artistic richness of the place.

The church Sainte-Agathe thus illustrates the religious and artisanal heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, mixing local history, cabinetmaker know-how and Catholic devotion. Its architecture and furniture make it a significant example of the Doubs sacred heritage.

The Poyards family, cabinetmakers and organ builders, marked the history of the church with its woodwork achievements and pulpit, reflecting the importance of local artisans in the beautification of religious buildings in modern times. Their work, classified as historical monuments, highlights the central role of these professions in preserving heritage.
