Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Agnès de Tréfumel, located in the Côtes-d'Armor in Brittany, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 11th century. It is a typical example of the early Romanesque churches of Great Britain, with a nave and a rectangular plan choir separated by a diaphragm arch. Its architecture, marked by the absence of foothills and a tower of frame, was preserved despite several changes between the 14th and 19th centuries. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1964.

The nave, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, retains its initial volume, while major modifications were made in the 14th century, such as the addition of a bay with two lancettes and a seigneurial chapel. In the seventeenth century, the sacristy was rebuilt, and restoration work in the nineteenth century introduced new windows. The church is built in small granite and limestone apparatus, with inner proportions respecting the number of gold.

The south porch, renovated in the 15th century, houses a Romanesque door covered with a 17th century awning. Inside, the glazed structure of the nave and the ceiling painted in starry sky of the choir testify to architectural developments. The furniture, including 17th century retables and polychrome statues, completes this coherent historical ensemble.

The parish enclosure, reduced in the 20th century, once retained a medieval cemetery cross. The materials used, granite and limestone of the falun, reflect local resources. The church, owned by the commune, remains a valuable testimony of Breton religious and architectural history.

The seigneurial families, such as the Coëtquen and the Beaumanoir, marked the history of the place, notably by the 14th century seigneurial chapel. The funeral slabs and allied weapons of these families, visible in the building, recall their past influence.

Finally, the church of Sainte-Agnès, with its elongated plan and its tower, is part of an architectural tradition shared with other Breton churches, such as those of Saint-André-des-Eaux or Saint-Maden. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1964 underscores its heritage importance.
