Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Anne de Goyave is a Catholic building located in Guadeloupe, built on a moron overlooking the city. Its history is marked by a succession of destructions and reconstructions: a first wooden building, erected in the early eighteenth century, was destroyed by a cyclone in 1738. Replaced by a stone church, the church was burned in a revolt in 1802 and rebuilt in 1828 before being ravaged by earthquakes in 1843 and 1851.

The current neo-classical version was built in 1861. Only the pilaster façade, the mouled cornice and the pediment remain. The church has undergone various enlargements and repairs over the centuries. It is accompanied by a parish hall and a presbytery, and today occupies an area of 476 m2 after work started in 2019.

The new church, whose construction cost 2.2 million euros and was entrusted to the SEMAG (Société d'Economie Mixte d'Agénagement de la Guadeloupe), was inaugurated on 5 August 2022. It is blessed by David Macaire, apostolic administrator of Guadeloupe, and is distinguished by a large white cross overlooking the site.
