Origin and history

Sainte-Anne de Heume-l'Église is a Catholic building located in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its construction probably dates back to the 12th century, although its present form incorporates major changes made during the 19th century. The building is distinguished by its elongated plan, initially composed of two naves of five spans, reduced to four after the destruction of the first western span during the 19th century works. This span was replaced by a bell tower, marking a significant transformation of its original structure.

The 19th century works, carried out between 1859 and 1862 under the direction of architect Emile Mallay and carried out by the entrepreneur Antonio Perrière, included the removal of the first span, the addition of the bell tower, and the replacement of the frame. Departmental funds completed the funding in 1863 for additional repairs. Between 1904 and 1907, a new restoration campaign, supervised by architect Ruprich-Robert and executed by Philibert Barthon, concerned the structure, the cover, and various interior developments. These interventions helped preserve original Romanesque elements, such as the dogive vaults and the walls in mixed lava, tuff and basalt apparatus.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 22 May 1905, the church of Sainte-Anne illustrates the architectural evolution of rural religious buildings, mixing medieval heritage and modern adaptations. Its official protection underlines its heritage importance, both for its history and for its unique constructive features, such as the use of local volcanic materials (lave, basalt) and its slate and lauze roof. The building remains today the property of the municipality of Heume-l-Church and bears witness to parish life and regional architectural practices throughout the centuries.
