Origin and history

The church Sainte-Anne de Nohant, located in the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a Catholic religious building built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It belonged in 1115 to the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Déols, as evidenced by a papal bubble of Pascal II. Its architecture combines primitive Romanesque elements, such as the 11th century octagonal pillars, and 12th century reshuffles, including capitals carved from animal and floral motifs.

The choir, typical of the 12th century, features a broken cradle and a flat bedside decorated with wall paintings. A particular feature is the eroded capitals, where quadrupeds, birds and stylized characters are still distinguished. These details, as well as the tiles decorated with flower buds, suggest a stylistic transition to the twelfth century, despite the archaic appearance of the building.

In the 16th century, changes were made, such as replacing the primitive columns with massive pillars in the west, while retaining the ancient capitals. The southern chapel, added at that time, houses a rough wooden awning nicknamed "caquetry", symbol of Berrichon romanticism associated with George Sand. This last element, rare in the Romanesque churches of the region, bears witness to the modesty of the means of the parish.

The church is inseparable from local cultural history: in 1842, Eugène Delacroix painted the Virgin's education on a canvas made from a corset by George Sand during a stay in Nohant. This painting, now preserved at the George Sand Museum in La Châtre, illustrates the links between the artist, the novelist and the village. The present bell, offered in 1894 by Maurice Sand's mother-in-law, replaces the old cracked one.

Ranked a historic monument on September 2, 1943, the church benefited from an external renovation between 2011 and 2012. His contemporary stained glass windows, made by Jean Mauret, create light games through the nave. The partly modified floor, however, retains old slabs visible under the awning of the chapel, revealing two original keys.

Managed by the parish of La Châtre and the Archdiocese of Bourges, the church of Sainte-Anne remains a place of worship and memory, where medieval history, Romanesque heritage and literary heritage intersect. Its architectural recount and its preserved details make it an authentic witness of Boischaut Sud.
