Origin and history

Sainte-Anne de Sainte-Anne-d'Entremont Church, also known as Sainte-Anne Chapel, is a Catholic building located in Bernières-d'Ailly, Calvados department, Normandy. According to tradition, it was built around 1040-1050 by Countess Lesceline, wife of Guillaume, Count of Eu and brother of the Duke of Normandy Richard II. Its foundation would be linked to a vow made after a hunting accident involving a boar and a young member of his family. This limestone monument bears witness to Norman medieval religious architecture.

In 1375, the church became an annex to the church of Saint-Vigor de Perrières, losing its independent status. It is listed as a simple chapel branch of the priory of Perrières. Over the centuries, it has been repaired, especially around 1744, and restored in the 19th century, especially for its bays. The building was listed as historic monuments on February 18, 1975, recognizing its heritage value.

An annual pilgrimage takes place every last Sunday in July, attracting faithful who came to invoke Saint Anne for the protection of their families and fertility. This pilgrimage perpetuates a religious tradition rooted in the region for centuries. The chapel also houses ex-votos, testimonies of popular devotion. Today, it remains a place of worship and heritage, managed by the municipality of Bernières-d'Ailly.
