Origin and history
The Sainte-Brigide church of Yèvre-la-Ville, located in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a monument dating back to the early twelfth century. At that time, the choir, surmounted by a bell tower, as well as the absidiole and oriented absidioles were built. These elements, perhaps inspired by an oriental tradition, were complemented by two carpented stands above the nave, accessible by curved arcades. The two side chapels, initially separated from the choir, were later integrated into the liturgical space after the opening of the recast walls.
In the 15th century, the nave was reinforced by committed supports and foothills, but the stone vault, perhaps destroyed during the Wars of Religion, was never restored in its original form. In 1866, a false brick and plaster vault was added, requiring a modification of the roof to increase its height. The neo-gothic porch dates back to 1877. The building, with an elongated plan, includes a unique three-span nave opening onto a choir flanked by two apsidioles, finished with a cul-de-four apse. The square bell tower, pierced with curved bays, and the bedside keep the cornices with primitive modillons.
Classified as a historical monument since October 11, 1988, the church of Sainte-Brigide belongs to the parish of Yèvre-la-Ville, attached to the diocese of Orleans in the pastoral area of the Beauce. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque, Gothic and neo-Gothic elements, reflecting the different periods of construction and restoration. The site, located in the centre of the village near the departmental road 923, remains an important testimony of the local religious and architectural heritage.
