Origin and history

The church Sainte-Cécile de Sainte-Cécile, located in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region, is a neo-Gothic religious building erected between 1899 and 1903. Designed by architect François Bougoüin, it is distinguished by a mixed architectural plan, combining a central transept and a traditional orientation, enriched by polygonal volumes and prominent exterior decorative elements. Its interior reflects a strong Angelian influence, typical of the region at that time.

The construction of the church is part of a local context marked by the ephemeral mining of the Marzelle coal mine (1878-1884), abandoned due to the mediocrity of the deposit. The municipality of Sainte-Cécile, founded in 1093, is classified as a historical monument in 2007, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. This ranking also highlights its central role in the community and religious life of the rural village.

The village of Sainte-Cécile, crossed by Petit Lay and located at the junction of departmental roads, is based on a predominantly agricultural economy (95% of the soil in 2018), with arable land, meadows and heterogeneous areas. The oceanic climate, mild and low in summer, promotes this historic agricultural vocation. The church, with its stained glass windows and its neo-Gothic style, embodies both the religious heritage and the local identity, complemented by picturesque houses and mills characteristic of the vendean bocage.

The architect François Bougoüin, the project manager, designed a building whose external composition is rhythmic by foothills, stair turrets and a stairway of volumes. These stylistic choices reflect the architectural currents of the late 19th century, combining innovation and medieval references. The church, owned by the commune, remains a symbol of the persistence of religious and cultural traditions in an area marked by the industrial and agricultural transformations of the time.
