Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Colombe de La Digne-d'Amont, located in the Aude department in Occitanie, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the tenth century. A document of 943 already mentions an earlier building, whose semicircular apse was raised in turn to strengthen the defences of the adjacent castle. This first church, oriented to the east, retained a vaulted nave in a full hanger cradle and a choir, elements still visible today in the chapel integrated with the present building.
The building of the present church spans between the 13th and 16th centuries, with an architectural peculiarity: its sanctuary is located to the west, inversely to the traditional orientation. The tower overlooking the ancient apse was enhanced, probably during this reconstruction, to accommodate a tower-wall, redesigned and raised in 1853. Defensive elements, such as a fortified gate adorned with a coat of arms (old entrance of the castle), testify to its connection to the nearby fortress, of which there are still walls reused in the current structure.
The church was consecrated in 1088 by Dalmace, archbishop of Narbonne, marking its religious importance in the region. In 1948, some elements — the elevations of the north and west walls, the bell tower, and two carved doors — were listed as historical monuments. These protections highlight the heritage value of a building with a medieval heritage, defensive adaptations and architectural evolutions over nearly six centuries.
