Origin and history

The Sainte-Engrace church of Amélie-les-Bains is a Romanesque building located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in Occitanie. It is located to the south of the commune, on the territory of the former municipality of Montalba-d'Amélie, in a mountainous and wooded setting. Accessible by hiking trails, it overlooks the gorges of Mondony, offering an isolated and preserved panorama.

Abandoned for an indefinite period, the church gradually deteriorated before being restored at the beginning of the 21st century thanks to the action of a local association. This renovation has preserved its characteristic architecture, typical of the Romanesque churches of Roussillon, while giving life to this religious and historical heritage.

Architecturally, the Church of St. Engrace has a rectangular nave extended by a semicircular apse, a recurring model in the area. Its facade is surmounted by a bell tower, a distinctive element of its Romanesque style. These features make it a representative example of the local medieval religious heritage, which is now highlighted by safeguard initiatives.

The building is documented in specialized works, such as the Forgotten Romanesque Churches of the Roussillon (2003) by Géraldine Mallet, and is the subject of detailed notices on the open heritage platform of the Ministry of Culture. These sources highlight its historical and architectural importance, as well as its conservation efforts.

The Association Sauvement du Patrimoine plays a key role in preserving the church, organizing restoration activities and disseminating information about its history. The site is also referenced in heritage databases, such as Clochers de France, which shows its recognition as a notable monument to the Christian heritage of the Pyrénées-Orientales.
