Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Florence, located in the village of Sainte-Florence (Gironde), is a Catholic religious building built in the 12th century. It is distinguished by its Romanesque architecture, with a unique rectangular nave ending in a hemicycle apse, narrower. To the west, a bell tower-wall dominates the whole, while a partially carved Romanesque portal marks the entrance. Traces of an earlier 11th century church remain, attesting to an ancient religious occupation on this site.

The interior of the church reveals remarkable elements such as a triumphal arch in full hanger, adorned with carved capitals representing lions, leaves and a character standing between two lions. The nave, not vaulted, also preserves fragments of painted decoration dating from the late Gothic period. In the 15th century, a door was pierced in the north wall, decorated with two angels holding a shield, adding a late stylistic element.

Major modifications were made in the 18th century, with the addition of a sacristy to the south in 1727 and a porch to the west, protecting the Romanesque portal. This porch retained its original frame, offering a rare testimony of the craft of the time. The building, owned by the commune, was listed as a historic monument on April 16, 2002, recognizing its heritage value.

Located near a source of pilgrimage, the Church of St.Florence illustrates the central role of religious buildings in medieval rural life. Its location on the D18 departmental road, between Saint-Jean-de-Blaignac and Saint-Pey-de-Castets, makes it a historical and cultural landmark for the Libourne region.

Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its architectural importance, particularly for its Romanesque elements (clocher-mur, apse, capitals) and its posterior additions (Gothic door, sacristy). The church remains a preserved example of the evolution of religious styles in Aquitaine, from the Romanesque period to the 18th century.
