Origin and history

The Sainte-Geneviève church of Puisseux-en-France, mentioned in 1119 in a papal bubble of Calixte II, underwent several reconstructions. Its present building, in rustic Gothic style, dates mainly from the 16th century, with changes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The choir and its side chapels, vaulted in the Renaissance, contrast with the wooden ceiling nave. The bell tower, unaxed and flanked by pepper turrets, bears witness to a two-stage construction.

The church has been dedicated to Saint Geneviève since its consecration in 1578 by Bishop Henri le Meignen, Bishop of Digne. Under the Ancien Régime, she was dependent on the archdiocese of Paris, then on the diocese of Versailles after the Revolution. In the 20th century, the creation of the diocese of Pontoise (1966) and the urbanization of Puisseux-en-France relegated the church to the background, to the benefit of the chapel Sainte-Thérèse, built to serve the new neighborhoods.

The construction campaigns remain poorly defined: the choir, dated the third quarter of the 16th century, combines flamboyant Gothic elements (sculpted capitals) and Renaissance (ducine vaults). The nave, with large arcades similar to those of the choir, could date from the same period, although later repairs (XVIII–XIX centuries) blurred the traces. The windows on the south side and the sacristy, built in 1817, are modern additions.

Ranked a historic monument in 1976, the church houses remarkable furniture, including a 17th century baroque altarpiece and a bell of 1793, melted by Gaudiveau. Despite its modest appearance, it illustrates the architectural and liturgical evolution of a rural parish in Île-de-France, marked by wars, diocesan reforms and the exodus to new urban centres.

The exterior, sober, is characterized by apparent rubble and austere bell tower, while the interior, homogeneous despite its various construction phases, preserves sculptural details (angels, vine leaves) and 18th century woodwork. Today little used for worship, the church serves mainly exceptional celebrations (marriage, funeral).
