Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Madeleine in Dunes, classified as a Historic Monument, dates mainly from the 15th century, although its origins date back to the 13th century. It consists of a polygonal apse nave, flanked by lateral chapels open on the spans preceding the apse. Its steeple, of square base and surmounted by two octagonal floors with a masonry arrow, was rebuilt in 1845 during the reign of Louis-Philippe. A stone balustrade adorns the base of the arrow, while the sacristy, to the south, occupies the angle between the apse and the last side chapel.
The architectural elements of the church reflect several epochs: the portal dates from the first half of the 14th century, while the choir and a span of the nave were built in the 16th century. Lateral chapels, on the other hand, come from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The bell tower, the work of architect Lebrun, was erected in 1845, and the first three spans of the nave were rebuilt in 1890. The vaults, the nave frame and other parts, such as windows, have also been restored.
The building was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 17 December 1926. Property of the commune of Dunes, located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie region, this church illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region over the centuries. Its location, at 2 Avenue des Pyrénées, makes it a point of local interest marked by rich history and successive transformations.
