Origin and history

Sainte-Madeleine de Rouen Church is a neo-classical Catholic religious building built between 1767 and 1781 in the city of Rouen, Normandy. Its architecture marks the urban landscape, with a dome surmounted by a bell tower, typical of this artistic period. The works, initially started by architect Parvy in 1754, were interrupted due to the collapse of the foundations. The project was taken over and completed by Jean-Baptiste Le Brument, assisted by Jean-Jacques Lequeu, before his consecration in 1781 by Archbishop Dominique de La Rochefoucauld.

The church was classified as historical monuments in 1910, recognizing its heritage value. Located in Place de la Madeleine, on the edge of the Rue du Contrat-Social, it dominates the city centre of Rouen. A recent renovation campaign (2022-2023) concerned its roof, resulting in a temporary closure to worship. Its interior is distinguished by a unique window adorning the choir balcony, while the other bays are equipped with simple windows, reflecting a sobriety characteristic of the era.

Originally, the church of Sainte-Madeleine was linked to the former Hôtel-Dieu in Rouen, as evidenced by its alternative designation in the archives. Its management is now the responsibility of the municipality, which maintains and opens it to the public. The building embodies both a neo-classical architectural heritage and an active place of worship, despite the ad hoc work required by its maintenance. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the Rouennais and Norman heritage.
