Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Madeleine d'Estandeuil is part of a series of religious buildings built in Livradois during the second half of the 15th century. Its architecture, marked by narrow windows, a unique and wide nave, and a polygonal choir, reflects the characteristics of the Southern Gothic, influenced by the Cadadean school. The structure also includes a bell tower, two spans, and side chapels forming a rudimentary transept. A spiral staircase, housed in a polygonal turret with the western façade, serves the bell tower. Prior to the Revolution, the church was under the appointment of the Abbé de La Chaise-Dieu, emphasizing its anchoring in the regional monastic network.
The massive proportions and austerity of the volumes of the Church of St.Madeleine illustrate a mountain adaptation of Gothic canons, typical of rural and isolated areas such as Livradois. The building, oriented according to Christian tradition, combines functional simplicity and religious symbolism. Its single-nave plan and the absence of marked coasts recall the technical and economic constraints of parishes far from the major urban centres. Historic Monuments protection (registration in 1990) recognizes its heritage value, linked to its state of conservation and its architectural representativeness.
The location of Estandeuil, in the current Puy-de-Dôme (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), places the church in a territory historically marked by the influence of Clunisian abbeys and local lords. The role of the Abbé de La Chaise-Dieu in appointing the servant before 1789 attests to the ecclesiastical dependence of the place. Today, the building, a communal property, remains an identity landmark for the village, although its accessibility and vocation (cult, tourism, events) are not specified in the available sources.
