Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Marie d'Anglet came into being in the 19th century, when a chapel was erected in 1867 on the heights of the House of Love, offered by Mrs.Cazères to serve a hamlet of fishermen and peasants. This isolated area, surrounded by dunes and pine trees, gradually developed, and the chapel became parish church in 1921 under the impulse of Bishop Gieure, with Abbé Rouquette as the first parish priest. The parish, bounded by the ocean, Biarritz, and the BAB tram line, saw its initial chapel demolished in 1946 to widen a road, leaving only a cross marking its location.

The construction of the present church was launched in 1930 by Canon Maurice Sabès, the second parish priest, who wanted an imposing building comparable to that of Saint-Léon. The plans are designed by Pierre Fonterme and the construction site led by Charles Hébrard. The first stone was blessed on September 28, 1930, and the church was dedicated on September 11, 1932. Its interior mixes Basque Labourdine and Art Deco tradition, with stands reserved for men until the 1970s, frescoes by Berthe Grimard, and stained glass windows from the 1930s-1940s, including those representing Jeanne d'Arc or Saint Thérèse. A Mutin-Cavaillé-Coll organ, acquired in 1914 after the confiscation of the Bayonne seminary, was installed there.

Classified as a historic monument since September 21, 2015, the church depends on the diocese of Bayonne and the parish of Louis-Édouard Cestac. Its stone architecture, with a 21.35-metre nave and 13-metre choir, includes a triangular gable bell tower with two bells, Marie-Claire and Joseph. Among his treasures, a 16th century painting of Raphael's school, representing a Virgin with the Child or the mystic marriage of St Catherine, also comes from the former seminary of Bayonne. The mosaics of the transept, signed Mauméjean (1938), and an ex-voto in the shape of a morutier of 1906 testify to its connection with the local maritime community.
