The bedside: registration by order of 21 November 1925

Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Marie de Cissac-Médoc, located in the municipality of the same name in Gironde (New Aquitaine), is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. Its bedside, dated from this period, is the oldest architectural element still visible today. This monument illustrates the Romanesque architecture typical of the region, marked by a sobriety and robust character of the rural churches of the time.

Most of the current building, with the exception of the choir, was rebuilt around 1867, reflecting a significant restoration or reconstruction campaign in the 19th century. This late intervention suggests a desire for modernization or repair, common in rural churches after centuries of use and wear. The bedside was protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments on November 21, 1925, highlighting its heritage value.

The location of the church, in the heart of Cissac-Médoc, indicates its central role in community life since the Middle Ages. At that time parish churches served not only as places of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, often linked to wine-growing activities, which had been dominant in the Medoc for centuries. Their presence structured the social and religious landscape of the villages.

Today, Sainte-Marie Church remains a witness to local history, mixing medieval heritage and subsequent transformations. Although the sources do not specify its current use (regular culture, visits, events), its status as a communal property and its partial inscription in the title of Historic Monuments make it a key element of the heritage of Cissac-Médoc.
