The first three spans of the nave (cf. G 150): inscription by order of 19 August 1975

Origin and history

Sainte-Marie de Genestelle Church is a religious building located in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 12th century, it embodies the typical Romanesque architecture of this period, marked by simplicity and robustness adapted to the spiritual and community needs of the rural populations of the time. Its partial inscription as historic monuments in 1975 bears witness to its heritage importance, particularly for its first three nave spans, protected by ministerial decree.

Genestelle, like many Ardèche villages, developed around her church, the central place of religious and social life in the Middle Ages. At that time, parish churches served not only as a framework for the offices, but also as a gathering point for collective decisions, local festivals and important events in the lives of the inhabitants. Their construction often reflected the feudal or seigneurial organization, although available sources do not specify the sponsors or the exact circumstances of the construction of Sainte-Marie.

Partial protection of the church in 1975 specifically concerns the first three spans of the nave, identified under the cadastral reference G 150. This inscription is part of a broader approach to preserving the ardèche religious heritage, as evidenced by the list of historical monuments of the department. The building, owned by the municipality of Genestelle, remains a symbol of the rich medieval heritage of the region, although architectural details or subsequent modifications are not documented in the sources consulted.
