Origin and history

Sainte-Marie de Lonzac Church is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Lonzac, Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. It embodies the religious architecture of the French Renaissance, with a funeral vocation marked by its history.

The church was commissioned and financed between 1520 and 1530 by Jacques Galiot de Genouillac, a military figure and aristocrat of the time. His initial goal was to house the tomb of his first wife, Catherine d'Archiac, the lady of Lonzac, thus highlighting his role as a memorial and a place of worship.

Classified as historical monuments in 1907, the church of Sainte-Marie bears witness to the heritage and artistic importance of the rural churches of Charente-Maritime. Its inscription in the Mérimée bases and its association with observatories of religious heritage confirm its historical and cultural value.
