Origin and history
The Sainte-Marie du Genevrey church, located in the hamlet of Genevrey in Vif (Isère), is a Romanesque religious building built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is distinguished by its simple schist and tuf architecture, composed of a nave framed by low side and a choir opening onto a sacristy and a bell tower. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1908, it is considered one of the best preserved medieval churches in the Grenoblo region, with three distinct construction phases: 11th century, mid-12th century, and late 13th century. A bell dated 1551, classified in 1963, and a 15th century stone cross, classified in 1911, bear witness to its rich heritage.
The church is mentioned for the first time in 1100 in the cartular of Saint Hugues under the name ecclesia of Genevrea, dedicated to the Assumption. After joining the church of Vif in 1801, it became a parish branch in 1845 thanks to a petition addressed to Bishop Simon of Grenoble. This status lasted until 1918. Today, it remains one of the two active churches of Vif, belonging to the parish of Saint-Loup, and is recognized as a Marian sanctuary alongside the Virgin of the Liberation of Varces.
The church's west porch houses a remarkable fresco from the Virgin to the mantle, painted between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. This representation, inspired by the theme of the Virgin of Mercy, shows Mary protecting twelve characters under her coat. Unique in the region with that of the Saint-Étienne church of Laval, this fresco illustrates the artistic and spiritual importance of the site. A 15th century stone cross, a vestige of the old cemetery of the hamlet, completes this heritage complex.
The Church of St Mary embodies both a Romanesque architectural heritage and a still alive Marian devotional place. Its early classification (1908) and preservation of its original elements, such as the bell or fresco, make it a rare testimony of medieval religious art and local history. Its role in the community, marked by struggles for its parish autonomy in the 19th century, also reflects its anchoring in the lives of the inhabitants of Vif and Genevrey.
