The Church (Box AB 23): Registration by Order of 22 April 1994
Origin and history
The Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Bonifacio Church is a historical monument built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Located in the municipality of Bonifacio, in South Corsica, it illustrates the religious architecture of this period in Corsica. Although its initial vocation was cultual, it was later transformed into an oil mill, reflecting the economic and social adaptations of historic buildings over the centuries.
Classified as a historical monument, this church was officially protected by decree of 22 April 1994. This status underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history related to local activities, such as oil production. Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its precise location in the Bois du Cavo area, although the exact location is considered satisfactory a priori with a score of 6 out of 10.
The transformation of the church into an oil mill reflects the practical needs of Corsican communities at a time when religious buildings could be reassigned to secular uses. This type of conversion, common in Corsica as elsewhere, reveals the economic dynamics and changing priorities of local populations. Today, the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine remains a notable example of Corsican heritage, mixing spiritual heritage and industrial history.
