Origin and history

The church Sainte-Marie-Madeleine du Perchay, located in Val-d'Oise in Île-de-France, is a religious building whose origins date back to the late 11th or early 12th century. Originally, she presented herself as a single-velocity Romanesque church, whose nave now remains with its portal and the base of the bell tower. These elements, although modified, retain traces of their original style, such as the remains of Romanesque windows and carved capitals. The structure has been profoundly transformed over the centuries, notably by the addition of a Gothic chapel in the 13th century and a flamboyant choir after the Hundred Years' War.

The nave, initially devoid of a low side, received one to the south in the flamboyant Gothic period, while the bell tower was raised and redesigned. The vaults, windows and arcades were re-discovered or rebuilt, reflecting stylistic developments and liturgical needs. The church was listed as a historical monument in 1979, and restorations were carried out in the 1990s, although some parts, such as the choir, remain in a state of advanced degradation.

The furniture of the building includes classified elements, such as a 15th century funeral slab and a 16th century statue of Saint Catherine. These objects, along with the baptismal fonts and 19th-century windows, illustrate the historic and artistic richness of the site. The church, although still affiliated with the parish of Avernes and Marines, now hosts only two annual Masses, testifying to its role now more heritage than cultural.

Outside, the Romanesque portal, partially altered, and the flamboyant Gothic cross of the 15th or 16th century, classified since 1926, complete the monumental ensemble. These elements, combined with the sober but characteristic architecture of the French Vexin, make this church a representative example of the rural religious heritage of Île-de-France.

The history of the parish, linked to the local seigneury of the Guiry family, and the successive transformations of the building reflect the political and religious upheavals, from the Ancien Régime to the French Revolution. The gradual connection to the dioceses of Versailles and Pontoise also marks its institutional evolution over the centuries.
