Origin and history

The church Sainte-Nonne de Dirinon, located in the Finistère department in Brittany, is a Catholic building dating mainly from the 4th quarter of the 16th century, with additions to the 17th and 18th centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Nonne, mother of Saint Dewi (or Divy), patron saint of Wales. The church is distinguished by its gallery bell tower of 1588 and its porch with statues of the Apostles and a holy Trinity. It is part of a parish enclosure and was classified as a historic monument in 1916.

The monument presents a remarkable architectural and statuary ensemble, including a seigneurial bench of the Lesguern mansion, 17th century banners, stained glass windows illustrating the life of Saint Nun, and a gissant of the saint made by the Ducal workshop of the Folgoët. One of the bells, dated 1633 or 1655 according to the sources, bears an inscription mentioning its godfather and godmother, as well as the founder Jac. Louarn, whose brand represents a fox, a Breton linguistic symbol (the word louarn means fox).

The bell tower, of Breton type with double gallery in corbellation, is surmounted by an arrow bearing the dates 1588-1593. The pyramids and openworked frontons on the second floor highlight its characteristic architectural style. The building, owned by the municipality, is open for visit and keeps a religious goldsmith's shop displayed in a window. Its history and iconography reflect the local devotion to St.Nunne, a major figure in Breton and Welsh Christendom.

The church is part of a historical context marked by the importance of parish enclosures in Brittany, sacred spaces combining church, cemetery, calvary and sometimes ossuary. These ensembles illustrated the artistic and religious richness of the parishes, often supported by local lords, as evidenced by the seigneurial bench in the building. The presence of stained glass and paintings on the panel also highlights the educational and decorative role of sacred art in modern times.
