Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Radegonde de Sérandon, classified as a Historical Monument since 1926, is a building built between the 12th and 15th centuries. Originally equipped with a unique nave typical of Romanesque architecture, it was redesigned in the 15th century to adopt a three-nave structure, vaulted at that time. The five-parted, characteristic of late Gothic, also dates from this period. The lower sides still retain elements of the 12th century, like pilasters and half-columns, testimonies of its first phase of construction.

The 12th century porch, richly adorned, features full-cinder arches resting on columns with carved capitals. Between these columns, four high reliefs depict various scenes: Daniel and Lange, two characters in front of a dish, a bearded rider followed by sheep, and a lion facing two animals. These sculptures, symbolic or biblical, illustrate local Romanesque art. Outside the porch, a sculpted banner depicts the zodiac signs and the work of the months, a pattern common in medieval churches to mark liturgical and agricultural times.

The present door, reborn in 1755, replaced the original of the 12th century, highlighting the transformations suffered by the building over the centuries. The church, owned by the commune of Serandon (Corrèze), thus embodies almost nine centuries of architectural and religious history. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1926 attests to its heritage value, particularly for its carved elements and its hybrid Roman-Gothic structure.

The location of the church in the village of Serandon makes it a central point of the village. Its approximate address, 5022 Le Bourg Est, and its Insee code (19256) place it precisely in Corrèze, in the former Limousin region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. The available data point to a geographical accuracy that is considered satisfactory a priori, facilitating its identification in the local landscape.
