Origin and history
Sainte-Suzanne de Sainte-Suzanne-sur-Vire is a Catholic building built in the middle of the 15th century, located in the Manche department in Normandy. It is distinguished by its flamboyant architectural style, notably visible in its polygonal choir and southern porch. It has been listed as a historical monument since 3 March 1931 and illustrates the medieval religious heritage of the region. Its furniture includes remarkable pieces such as a 16th-century Eucharistic wardrobe and 15th and 16th-century washbasins, although a classified 19th-century statue of St. Suzanne was stolen in 1967.
Originally, the church was mentioned in the 12th century as a donation by Marie de Thaun and Hodierne de Sainte-Suzanne (wife of Guillaume Corbel) to the monks of the Priory of Saint-Fromund. This link with monastic communities reflects the religious and social importance of the site at that time. The present building, rebuilt later, preserves traces of this medieval history, while integrating characteristic elements of late Gothic architecture, such as vaults on dogive cross-sections.
The protection of the church also extends to its furniture: a wooden statue of the 17th century Virgin is classified since 1944, highlighting the artistic richness of the place. The porch, to the south of the nave, and the rectangular span preceding the polygonal bedside testify to a spatial design typical of Norman rural churches. Today, the church remains a symbol of local heritage, managed by the municipality and open to the visit.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its ranking and its history, while noting practical details such as its exact address: 1 Rue de l ́Église, 50750 Sainte-Suzanne-sur-Vire. Its state of conservation and its location near La Vire make it a point of interest for lovers of religious architecture and Norman history.
