Origin and history

The church Sainte-Urse de Montbard, located in Côte-d'Or, originates in the chapel Saint-Louis des Châtelaines de Montbard, probably built in the 11th century. Integrated into the first enclosure of the castle, it became a parish church in the 16th century after the extension of its nave. Since then, it has undergone numerous architectural changes, mixing medieval elements and subsequent additions.

On the south side of the building, the seigneurial chapel houses the tomb of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon, famous naturalist, buried in 1788. His remains, exhumed after the Revolution, were replaced in 1973. The church also retains remarkable furniture, including an 18th century altarpiece and a Nativity by André Menassier (1599), classified as a Historic Monument. The interior frescoes are the work of Ernest Boguet.

Classified in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 1947, the church of Sainte-Urse illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of Montbard, while at the same time testifying to the link between the local heritage and major historical figures like Buffon. Its protection covers the entire building, now owned by the municipality.
