Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Victoire in Simiane-la-Rotonde, located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is a religious building built in the 16th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1922, reflecting its architectural and cultural importance for the region. Her name pays tribute to Saint Victoire, a venerated local figure whose legend tells that she lived as a hermit near the Buisseron before dying in front of the old church of the village.

Local tradition gives St Victoire a central place in the spiritual life of Simiane-la-Rotonde. According to legend, this hermit, a dying discovery near her natural oratory, would have expired in front of the church, thus sanctifying the place. In the 16th century, when the new church was built, the community decided to dedicate it to Saint Victoire, and this cult was perpetuated throughout the centuries: parish records show that many girls in the village bore his name. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the employers' feast even included a procession where the statue of the saint was carried by four women.

The Oratory of Saint Victoire, still visible on the sides of the Buisseron (1 120 m above sea level), recalls its link with the local landscape. This site, marked by a cave and a source where the hermit would have lived, remains a place of memory for the inhabitants. The present church, owned by the municipality, thus embodies both a 16th century architectural heritage and a religious tradition rooted in the identity of Simiane-la-Rotonde.

Historical sources, such as the Merimée base and the local archives, confirm the classification of the building in 1922 and its precise location in the village (code Insee 04208). Although architectural details are not described in the source texts, its status as a historical monument and its association with Saint Victoire make it a lasting symbol of the faith and of Provencal history.
