Origin and history

The church Santa Maria della Chiappella de Rogliano, located in Corsica, is a religious building dating back to the 4th quarter of the 11th century and the 1st quarter of the 12th century. It was first mentioned in 1113 when she donated to the Gorgone monastery, which attests to its early importance in the region. The site, occupied since Roman times, reflects historical and cultural continuity on this coastal territory.

In 1445, the church passed under the jurisdiction of the Chartreuse de Calvi, marking a change in its ecclesiastical management. In the 16th century, it underwent a major reconstruction and lost its status as a Pevian church, due to the depopulation of the coastline caused by the barbaric razzias. These frequent attacks have profoundly affected coastal communities, leading to changes in the religious and social organization of the region.

The building, rectangular, ends with a bedside with two semicircular apses arched in cul-de-four, characteristic of Romanesque architecture. Its anterior elevation is crowned by a bellet pierced with two bays in the middle of the hanger, adding to its heritage interest. In the 18th century, additional improvements were made, although less documented. The church has now been protected as a Historic Monument since a decree of 2 August 1990.

The location of the church, although known (approximate address to Rogliano), is considered to have poor accuracy (level 5 of 10). This monument illustrates the challenges of preserving heritage in an area marked by historical invasions and an ancient human occupation, while remaining an architectural testimony of medieval and modern times in Corsica.
