Origin and history

The church of Sancta-Maria-in-Albis, dedicated to the protector of Breil-sur-Roya, stands on the site of an ancient Romanesque church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its construction, begun in 1663, was completed in 1699, marking an architectural transition between the Romanesque and Baroque styles in the region. The building embodies local devotion and Italian artistic influence, visible in its decorations and liturgical furniture.

The organ of the rostrum, a jewel of the church, was built in 1758 by the Concone brothers for the chapel of the Holy Shroud of Turin. Offered in 1863 by Canon Dom Stefano Revelli, native of Breil, his rococo buffet – designed by architect Vittone and gilded by Giuseppe Riccardi – was transported and integrated into the church. The instrument, restored in 1984 by Yves Cabourdin, illustrates the cultural exchanges between Piedmont and the Alpes-Maritimes.

Ranked a historic monument in 1978, the church houses remarkable liturgical furniture, inscribed or classified: baroque altarpieces, statues of Saints Peter and Paul, religious paintings (including La Fuite in Egypt), and objects of worship such as reliquaries and ostensoirs. These elements, dated from the 17th and 18th centuries, reflect the artistic richness of the Catholic Contreform in the region.

The movable heritage extends to adjacent chapels, such as that of Saint Peter (retables of Saints Peter, Paul and Jerome) or Saint Catherine (representing his mystical Marriage). The commemorative plaques are reminiscent of the pious bequests and ornamentation works, reflecting the community commitment around this place of worship.

Historical sources, such as the works of Charles Botton (Histoire de Breil et des Breillois, 1996) or studies on the organs of the Roya-Bevera valleys (2003), underline the importance of Santa-Maria-in-Albis in the religious and architectural heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes. His organ, in particular, is cited as a rare example of an Italian instrument transplanted into France.
