Origin and history

The Santa Reparata church of Morosaglia, located in Upper Corsica, is an emblematic example of the Corsican Romanesque style. Built during the period of "pisane peace" (from the 11th century), it is distinguished by its unique, prolonged nave of a semicircular apse, typical of Corsican Pevan churches. Its local stone walls (schistes and calcschistes) and its monolithic tympanum carved of interlaced snakes (early 12th century) bear witness to a neat bill, although later changes, such as the addition of a baroque window in the 16th century, have changed its original appearance.

The western facade, adorned with a pre-roman lintel portal, and the northern façade, where a closed door and a mortuary plaque dated 1873 remain, reveal traces of its turbulent history. Inside, a 16th century polyptych, Virgin in majesty between Saint John the Baptist and Saint Reparate, attributed to the painter Carli Francesco and repainted in the 18th century, is classified as a historical monument. The church, accessible by steep paths, was also the place of baptism of Pascal Paoli, a major figure in Corsican history.

The building, listed as a Historic Monument in 1993, illustrates the Tuscan and local influences, with re-used stones dating perhaps from the 7th century. Its bell tower, added late, and its windows-murder on the south facade highlight the successive adaptations. Built on a nipple at an altitude of 911 m, it dominates the village of Morosaglia, reflecting both its spiritual role and its anchoring in the Corsican landscape.
