Raymond Oursel - Archivist and art historian Described the church and its architecture.

Origin and history

The Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul of Changy, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building dating from the first quarter of the 12th century. It illustrates Romanesque architecture by its transept and choir, the only elements preserved after the demolition of the nave in 1874. His ochre and pink stone apparatus, as well as his sculptural elements such as the dome on trunks and the arch of the apse, make this a remarkable testimony of this period.

The church was listed as historic monuments by order of 19 March 1971, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It houses a painting of 1730 depicting Saint Paul, also classified as a movable object. Today, it remains an active Catholic place of worship, attached to the diocese of Autun and the parish of Sainte Marie-Madeleine in Charolais.

Raymond Oursel, archivist and art historian, emphasized the harmony between the site and the building, as well as the architectural quality of the church. His analysis highlights the rigour of the Romanesque plan, the elegance of the sculptures and the agreement between the sanctuary and its environment, which make it a popular place for archaeologists, visitors and believers.

The property of the church belongs to the commune of Changy, identified by code Insee 71086. Its state of conservation and location (estimated at 6/10) make it an accessible monument, although information on its tourist use or its possible auxiliary vocations (rent, visits) is not detailed in the available sources.
