Origin and history

The church Saint-Loup de Saint-Loup-Géanges, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, is a religious building whose oldest parts (choir, foreword and bell tower) date back to the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The nave and its sides were built in the first half of the 13th century, while the left chapel of the choir dates from the second half of the 15th century. The building preserves various architectural traces, such as cradle vaults, broken arches and carved modillons, reflecting its medieval evolution.

A chapel of the church is dedicated to Saint Roch, patron saint of the village, known for treating the pestiferous and distributing his fortune to the poor. Each year, a celebration in his honour takes place on August 16. The church, registered as a historical monument since 1926, remains an active Catholic place of worship, attached to the diocese of Autun and to the parish of Saint-Jean-Baptiste-des-Trois-Rivières.

The building has undergone several modifications over the centuries: the former revestiary was transformed into a sacristy in 1688, a stair turret was added to the bell tower in 1769, and a clock dial dating from 1771 is still visible there. Major restorations took place in 1878 (roofs) and in 1997, preserving its architectural heritage.

The church is distinguished by its square bell tower topped by an arrow, its arched bays and carved capitals. It occupies a central place in the village, having replaced a former cemetery transferred in 1829. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic styles, illustrating the artistic transitions of the region.

Assigned to the municipality under the 1905 law, Saint-Loup Church remains a symbol of local religious and historical heritage. Its protection in 1926 emphasized its cultural importance, while studies such as Brigitte Prudhon's in 2020 documented its traditions, such as the feast of Saint-Roch.
