Origin and history

The Sainte-Geneviève Abbey, located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, was founded in the early 6th century by Clovis and Clotilde. Originally dedicated to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, it became the burial place of Clovis (511) and Saint Geneviève, whose relics were deposited there. The Merovingian basilica, ravaged by the Viking invasions in the 9th and 10th centuries, was rebuilt in the 12th century by Abbé Étienne de Tournai. It then became a high place of pilgrimage and a symbol of protection for Paris, thanks in particular to the processions of the shawl of Saint Geneviève, destroyed in 1793.

In the 17th century, the cardinal of La Rochefoucauld reformed the abbey by introducing the rule of Saint Augustine, placing Sainte-Geneviève at the head of the Congregation of France of regular canons. The convent buildings, remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries, now house Henri-IV High School. Among the remains preserved are the Clovis Tower (XI and XVI centuries), the last vestige of the medieval abbey, and the rebuilt cloister between 1744 and 1746. The abbey also played a major intellectual role with its library, which became the library of Sainte-Geneviève, and welcomed figures such as Descartes, whose coffin was deposited there in 1667.

The abbey was a place of power and knowledge: it housed a school founded by Pierre Abélard in the 12th century and served as a framework for the Templar trial (1309–1311). His land extended to Bagneux, Fontenay, and Vanves, showing his economic influence. After the Revolution, the abbey was transformed into a national good, then assigned to the University in 1796. The demolitions of the 19th century (notably to break through Clovis Street) spared the convent buildings, now classified as Historic Monuments.

The architecture of the abbey combines medieval elements (the Clovis Tower, capitals preserved at the museum of Cluny) and classics (classyard, arranged in 1645). The portal of the old church, decorated with statues of Saint Geneviève, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, illustrates its artistic importance. The crypt, partially accessible, housed Merovingian burials and tombs of personalities, such as Bishop Ceran of Paris (VIth century) or Duchess Agnes de Savoie (1508).

The end of the abbey as a religious institution intervened with the Revolution: its relics were destroyed, and its property dispersed. However, its heritage continues through the lycée Henri-IV, the library Sainte-Geneviève, and the Pantheon (former church Sainte-Geneviève built by Soufflot). Classified as a Historical Monument in 1998, the Abbey remains an exceptional testimony of the religious, political and cultural history of Paris, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
