Façades and roofs on the square (Box C 242): inscription by decree of 7 November 1973

Origin and history

The former sub-prefecture of Confolens, classified as Historic Monument, has a characteristic 18th century facade, structured on three floors. The floors are bounded by moulding bodies, while aileron windows pierce the attic. This building illustrates the elegance of the administrative buildings of the period, with careful details such as wrought iron impostes on the ground floor.

The wrought iron, a landmark of this monument, adorns the central span of the facade as well as the balconies of the first and second floors. Its unique ornamental motif, typical of the eighteenth century, reflects the artisanal know-how of the time. The facades and roofs on the square were included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 7 November 1973, highlighting their heritage value.

Located in 7 Place de la Fontorse in Confolens, in the Charente department (New Aquitaine region), this former sub-prefecture bears witness to the local administrative history. Its architecture, although partially documented, offers an overview of the aesthetic and functional standards of public buildings of the modern period. The location, noted as "passable" in precision, remains a central point in the urban fabric of Confolens.
