Origin and history

The ancient preceptory of the Antonins of Issenheim, founded at the end of the thirteenth century, is the only preserved vestige of this religious hospital. The Antonins, an order dedicated to the care of the sick, implanted there for a long time, with a first tutor mentioned in 1298. The site reached its peak in the 15th century under the influence of influential preceptors such as Jean d'Orlier (from 1460) and Guido Guersi, who commissioned major works by renowned artists, including Martin Schongauer and Mathias Grünewald, author of the famous Retable d'Issenheim for the church of preceptory.

The doorway, dating from the late 15th century, is the oldest architectural element still standing. The convent buildings, partially rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries (dated 1626 and 1698), were rebuilt after the church fire in 1831. It was rebuilt in 1854 by the Jesuits, who acquired the site in 1843. Archaeological excavations carried out from 1987 revealed the foundations of the choir of the original Gothic church, while parts such as the vaulted corridor with blazoned keys or the polygonal hall bear witness to its past prestige.

Ranked a two-stage historical monument (inscription in 1988 for facades and interior elements, classification in 1994 for medieval remains), the preceptory illustrates Alsatian religious and artistic history. Today owned by a cult association, the site retains traces of its hospitable and spiritual role, while integrating contemporary functions such as accommodation or space rental. Its address at 53 rue de Guebwiller in Issenheim (High Rhine) makes it an accessible place, although its precise location is considered poor by the heritage bases.
